What can be done to help a child in Parental Separation?

Here are some tips to help children cope during and/or after parental separation:

Encourage your child to open up about their feelings.

Encourage your child to talk to you about their feelings about the situation. Allow kids to share sad, angry, or confused feelings without rushing to "fix" their emotions.

Keep it simple.

Keep your explanations simple and kid friendly, i.e. "We cannot get along anymore", and avoid mentioning adult details, as long-winded reasons may only confuse them or even emotionally aggravate them more.

Provide reassurance.

Remind your children that both parents will continue to love them and that they are not responsible for the parental separation.

Never speak ill of the other parent in front of your child.

It’s vital to be honest with your kids, but never be very critical of your ex in front of them. Be respectful of your spouse when talking about reasons for separation.

Involve professionals and/or other services if needed.

If your children still struggles to cope, seek help from professionals like Psychologists, Therapists, School-Based Mental Health Services or Support Groups.
